Your Continued Health and Happiness is Our Number One Marching Order
At Barber DME we know that living with a skin disease often means searching for an answer – a treatment that works for you.
We know there are many choices and that phototherapy is just one of them. However, scientists and clinicians alike agree that phototherapy is one of the most effective treatments available and is safe for most patients, including pregnant women, children, the elderly, and the immuno-compromised.
Living “clear” is the hope of every person who battles a skin condition.
Select the phototherapy unit that’s right for you.
Home phototherapy may be a good treatment option for you if…
- Other treatments have failed.
- Phototherapy in your doctor’s office is too inconvenient or unavailable.
- You want to save the cost of office treatment sessions and co-pays.
- You are seeking a long-term, non-drug treatment option.
Clearance rates up to 80%
Phototherapy is very effective in treating psoriasis, vitiligo and other skin disorders but there are no cures for these conditions. Clinical trials using Narrowband UVB have demonstrated clearance rates up to 80% for patients with psoriasis. With any type of treatment, symptoms can reoccur. How long clearance of symptoms will last varies from person to person, but with phototherapy you can easily begin again at any time if symptoms return.
Safety should always be a priority
Phototherapy is a time tested, safe and effective option with generally mild side effects such as sunburn and premature aging of the skin, and without increased rates of skin cancer, compared to the general population. The risks of alternative therapies, particularly the biologics, however, are much more severe. They include infections, immune system suppression, increased risks of lymphoma, brain infections, tuberculosis, and many others.
Frequently Asked Questions About Home Phototherapy
It’s usually best to keep uninvolved skin covered with clothing or sunscreen during your treatments, but follow your doctor’s advice. The most important thing about covering “healthy” skin is to be consistent, and always use the same covering techniques on each treatment. (External genitalia should be covered during PUVA therapy.)
The length of time varies from patient to patient, and between treatment indications. Typically psoriasis and eczema patients will see much faster results (a few weeks) than vitiligo patients (a few months). The most important thing is to be consistent with your treatments, and to follow your doctor’s treatment plan.
Choose a dry, enclosed room where others will not be exposed to the light. Optimum treatment times and lamp life will occur when the unit is kept in a room temperature area that is neither extremely hot nor cold.
Is it adjustable? Different pumps have different strengths of suction. You want a pump that will allow you to adjust the suction strength for maximum production and comfort.
What are its cleaning requirements? Breast pumps are designed with an open or closed system pumping system. You want to look for a breast pump with a closed system as a closed system stops your expressed milk from flowing back into the tubes or the pump, which protects your pump from being contaminated by bacteria, mold, and viruses.
Does it come with accessories? Different pumps will come with different types of accessories. One thing to look for is BPA-free product, as this will ensure that the materials are safe for you and your baby.
